Sunderland became a city in 1992 and alongside its riverside and seafront population centres it includes the new town of Washington and the towns of Hetton and Houghton. It has a population of more than 280,000 and continues to be a centre for manufacturing and technology.
Sunderland is the UK's automotive hub with more than 10,000 workers, has a rapidly developing low-carbon sector, and some of the world's biggest businesses from BAe to Barclays are major employers.
There is an expanding IT and software sector, highly-rated university, one of the region's two Premier League teams, an award-winning seafront, plus first-rate shopping, leisure and arts attractions from Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens to the National Glass Centre and world-famous Sunderland Empire.
