Response on smoking in private vehicles carrying children
27 August 2014
The Association is a member of the Making Smoking History in the North East Partnership which has the strategic aim of reducing smoking rates to 5% by 2025. We work closely with Fresh, the North East comprehensive tobacco control programme, set up in 2005 to reduce smoking rates in the North East of England. As such, the Association endorses the Make Smoking History in the North East Partnership’s response which addresses the detailed issues covered by the consultation. However, while being supportive of the regulations as drafted the Association has highlighted some high level issues in its own response, including:
• The harms of exposure to tobacco use and second-hand smoke
• The public support the protection of children
The Association supports the government in taking action now to ensure that more is being done to protect children in the North East from exposure to second-hand smoke as we work towards our aim of making smoking history in our region.
