Local Welfare Provision in 2015/16

27 November 2014

The Association responded to this government consultation making a number of key observations, proposals and giving an overview of the impacts for the North East.

Along with partners, North East Councils were extremely disappointed to learn that the funding provided for welfare assistance was to stop from 2015. The options within the consultation paper all lead to the same outcome, which is a direct cut in funding with an emphasis on local authorities having to fund provision from within existing and diminishing resources.

Withdrawal of funding for the Welfare Assistance Scheme will have particularly acute impacts in the North East – effecting the region disproportionately.

Local welfare provision enables councils to provide direct help and support to the most needy and vulnerable. The kinds of initiatives for which authorities in the North East have used local welfare funding are therefore highlighted in the response.

Examples of the impact of removal of funding on specific groups are also set out in the Annex.
