East Coast Mainline

20 May 2013

ANEC has consistently advocated for early improvements on the East Coast Main Line route and considers that the new franchise period can provide real scope for the successful operator to invest in better service quality, station upgrades, roll out of smart-ticketing technology, good levels of punctuality and improvements to the customer and overall passenger experience. Given current levels of patronage and future forecast demand, we would also wish to see the new InterCity Express trains, to be built at Newton Aycliffe in Durham, introduced as early as possible in the franchise period onto the East Coast service.

The need for high quality, reliable and punctual ECML services, vital to our connectivity and for the future competitiveness and prosperity of the North East has been highlighted in all consultation and engagement events undertaken with local authority stakeholders and the business community.
