North East councils welcome announcement of A1 as route of strategic national importance
23 May 2011
The importance of transport cannot be underestimated if the North East is to succeed in growing its economy and increase the contribution it makes to the national interest. Given the North East's relatively peripheral location, it is particularly important that the North East's transport infrastructure and connectivity with other areas of the country are strengthened in the future, in order to connect businesses with national and global markets and people with work and leisure opportunities.
Cllr Paul Watson, Chair of the Association of North East Councils, said: "The North East has a unique place in the economic geography of the UK, linking the two nations of England and Scotland. ANEC has long championed the importance of strategic transport links northwards - as well as to the south - to improve connections that will support economic growth, trade and tourism opportunities.
"We welcome and support today's announcement by the Transport Minister to designate the A1 north of Newcastle to the Scottish Border a route of strategic national importance and hope that over time this decision will result in greater opportunities for the A1 to benefit from future investment decisions, funding and infrastructure improvements."
