Response to the Department for Education Consultation on the Basis for the Decision on the Appropria

01 August 2011

This response highlighted the concerns that local authorities in the North East have about proposals for the transfer of funding to academies outlined in the consultation document. Local authorities will respond individually on the technical aspects of proposals relating to their individual areas however ANEC's response set out the key issues and implications for North East local government.

ANEC supported the principle that all schools, whether they are academies or not, should be funded fairly and agreed that no school should have a financial advantage or disadvantage in becoming an academy.

ANEC took the view that the current method of financing academies' central service costs through top slicing of formula grant was fundamentally inappropriate for the North East.
