Cultural development

There are a huge range of benefits associated with culture, from tourism and business impacts, positive gains for image and profile, attracting investment and improving quality of life, social inclusion and community development.

Arts and culture have stimulated economic and creative growth in the North East through major capital investments in bold iconic arts, culture and heritage projects, to the festivals and events that raise the profile and reputation of our area. These contribute approximately £1 billion to our economy and employ over 50,000 people. Arts and culture are central to communities and their well being, contributing to the resilience of our region.

Despite the enormous changes to funding and to organisations North East councils wanted to explore what could be done to ensure the great progress made in the North East's cultural development would not be diminished. ANEC collaborated with partners across all sectors including running two events involving a wide range of stakeholders, the first imforming and the second debating the work of a local authority member led task and finish group who drew on the insights of expert contributors.

As a result, ANEC set up a Culture Partnership for the North East.
